HEMP Field Updates

The HEALTH Alliance has been implementing Disaster Management training for operational levels in regions of Uganda by training multi-sectoral teams from districts in emergency operations planning. Since October 2009, an Epi-zoonosis component has been added to the district disaster management training. The first session covers introductory principles underlying the occurrence of epi-zoonotic diseases, their socio-economic and public health consequences and key considerations in their management. The second module outlines the occurrence, transmission, symptoms and control measures for 7 priority epi-zoonotic diseases in the region.

HEALTH Alliance now on the LinkedIn Professional Networking site & Twitter

You are encouraged to join the HEALTH Alliance group on LinkedIn and Twitter.  In 2009 we have seen the rapid maturation of these global social networks into significant tools for communication and collaboration among colleagues and professional communities.  Tulane will be organizing a session at the upcoming Deans and Directors Meeting, the objective of which will be to assist meeting participants in registering for and connecting with each other using these systems. But you need not wait for the the meeting!

Simple instructions on how to sign up for and access the Allaince using these social networks can be found on the HEALTH Alliance website here:

Instructions for Social Networking

These social networks represent another easy way to share news and events with the HEALTH Alliance.  Relevant network updates and activity will be incorporated into the monthly newsletter.

HEALTH Alliance websites now hosted at Makerere

Under a USAID/HED funded project, Tulane and Makerere have successfully completed a joint effort to establish a flexible web hosting environment at MUSPH and relocated the HEALTH Alliance and LIPHEA websites to Kampala.  All Alliance web applications are now hosted using this new system, and MUSPH now has the capacity to develop and host new applications and sites as needed.  Tulane remains available to provide system administration support as needed, but two technology transfer trainings have been conducted and the system is being independently maintained by two full time IT personnel at Makerere.

Upcoming Deans & Directors Meeting

Currently the next Deans and Directors meeting is scheduled to take place February 8th - 10th, 2010. The location of the meeting and the meeting agenda are still being finalized and more details will be included in upcoming newsletters.
